How to Add Value to Your Relationships

In our busy lives, it can be easy to overlook the importance of cultivating supportive relationships. Yet, when you have the right skills and strategies in place, these connections can become powerful vehicles for personal growth. In this article, we’ll explore how to add value to your relationships, using a series of guiding principles that can transform the relationships you have with others into a thriving community where mutual support and growth are valued.

 

Rule #1

When relationships are healthy, they offer an energizing level of companionship and life-long support. Whether romantic or friendship based, they can provide an invigorating flow of energy back and forth that supports our growth into our highest levels of creativity. In contrast, unhealthy relationships are toxic and deplete our vitality. They are often characterized by excessive negativity, criticism, and control dramas. This can leave us feeling exhausted and drained of our own energy, while fostering low self-esteem and an inability to achieve our goals and dreams.

 

Rule #2

Adding value to your relationships requires that you have the courage and confidence to speak up when necessary, and to set appropriate boundaries. It also means being willing to listen intently when someone else shares their thoughts, opinions and feelings with you, rather than responding defensively or interrupting them. Empathy is another key aspect of supportive communication, which involves putting yourself in the other person’s shoes and seeing things from their perspective.

A supportive partner will encourage you to be the best version of yourself, and they will celebrate your accomplishments without making you feel guilty for spending time with friends or family. They will never try to manipulate you or make you feel guilty for making different choices. They will respect your independence and individuality, and they will be supportive of you pursuing your passions and dreams, even if those don’t align with their own.

 

Rule #3

When it comes to supporting people, you should aim to help them believe in themselves and in their abilities. You can do this by providing encouragement and feedback that helps them see the positive effects of their actions. You should also challenge them when you feel they are selling themselves short or letting themselves down with their conduct. This is a form of healthy, supportive leadership that can help people to reach their full potential.

Supportive relationships can be difficult to establish, but they are worth the effort. The more you put into your relationships, the more you will receive in return.
