Welcome to the weekly edition of Unlocking Your Greatness with Wendy Bjork.  As an international bestselling author, speaker and guide to others, as well as founder of heartsofwellness.com, it is my mission to help others take steps forward and live their best lives!

When people are dying, one of the most common regrets they have is that they didn’t spend enough time doing things they loved. Living a simple life can help you avoid this mistake by letting go of unnecessary stress and focusing on what matters most. This means saying no to luxuries like fast food, social media, and excessive electronics, downsizing possessions, spending less money, eliminating multitasking, staying out of debt, and taking time off from work and responsibilities.

Having fewer things to clean and manage also makes it easier to tap into your creativity. Whether it’s dancing, painting, or singing, expressing yourself creatively can help boost your mood and improve your overall health. In fact, a recent study found that people who live a simple lifestyle experience improved mental and physical health. The study’s author, Duane Elgin, theorized that this may be due to the decreased stress and rest that simplicity promotes.

By focusing on your health and wellness, you can spend more time with the ones you love. This can lead to deeper relationships and greater happiness, which is a key ingredient of a happy and fulfilling life. A simple lifestyle can also reduce your risk of depression and anxiety by reducing your levels of the hormone cortisol.

The first step to simplifying your life is figuring out what your values are and then choosing to live by them. This will make it much easier to define your boundaries in all areas of your life, from your home and schedule to relationships and more. Boundaries can include deciding how many clothes you need, how much space to devote to storing seasonal decorations, and what constitutes a “good” or “bad” purchase. Having these guidelines will help you say no to obligations that aren’t in line with your values and yes to those that are.

In addition to having clear values, a simple lifestyle will allow you to be more aware of your needs and wants. This can be difficult for many of us, but by examining your goals and priorities, you can decide what is really important to you and what’s not. Once you’ve done this, it will be a lot easier to say no to the things that aren’t important to you and focus on what is.

There are a lot of great benefits to living a simpler lifestyle, but the most obvious is that it can help you live longer. By limiting your purchases, eliminating distractions, and staying out of debt, you can spend more time doing the things that matter most to you and enjoy your life more. So, get started today and see how a simple lifestyle can benefit you! Just remember to be intentional about the changes you make and never stop learning.  Remember to take it one step at a time.  When we try to make too many changes all at once, we tend to become overwhelmed and then give up.
