Reading Time: 4 minutes

We all need to vent occasionally, which can be essential for our mental wellbeing.
Is there a point when we find ourselves taking venting too far and it turns into classic complaining?

In the world of work, relationships and personal life, complaining is all but unavoidable. Whether it’s traffic, a frustrating customer, or a coworker’s poor performance, we all gripe now and then about something that irks us or someone else. While no one likes a complainer, it’s important to know how to turn your griping into believing that you can actually make a difference in the outcome. So, what are some expert-backed tips for flipping your complaining into conquering?

Step 1: Remove the Offense

The first thing you need to do is stop taking offense at the things you’re complaining about. It’s impossible to solve a problem you are upset about if you are continually ratcheting up your emotional response unnecessarily.

Step 2: Reframe the Complaint

To help break the cycle, start to reframe the complaints you’re hearing from others. Instead of reacting to them as if they were coming at you, approach them with an open mind and be willing to consider how you can change the situation for the better. You can even take the lead and offer your own suggestions for improvement. Studies have shown that when you present solutions to others, their frustration can be lowered and they may be more willing to take action.

Step 3: Ask for More Information

When you’re talking to a complainer, make sure that you are asking them to provide more information about the situation they are complaining about. You can even suggest that they write down the details of what has happened or how they’re feeling about it. This will get them to focus more on the positives and less on the negatives, helping them to regain perspective.

Step 4: Ask For Advice

Often, people who complain are looking for validation or don’t want to accept that there is a way to fix the problem at hand. So, if you have an ally in the person to whom you’re complaining, ask for their advice or how they’ve dealt with similar issues in the past. This can be extremely helpful in breaking the cycle of negative thinking. Shifting into a conqueror mindset and taking steps towards your goals and dreams may seem like a momentous step but it’s necessary. Seeking ways to rise above your situation will help you get back in track.

Step 5: Practice Gratitude

When people are complaining, a simple reminder of how much they have to be thankful for can help them to shift gears. Taking the time to reflect on what you have to be grateful for is not only good for your mood, but also helps to lower the stress hormone cortisol.

Changing your habit of complaining takes time, but it’s worth it in the long run. It can improve your mood, boost your happiness and enhance the quality of your interactions with others. So, if you’re tired of blaming other people for the bad things that happen in your life or at work, give these expert-backed tips on how to flip your complaining into believing a try. Your future self will thank you for it!

Welcoming acceptance into your life will allow you to let go of things you cannot control, and curb the complaint habit for a healthier mind, body and spirit.
